In the courts of medieval Europe, kings and noblemen kept jesters. The jester's function was specific and, once you understand it, slightly uncanny: he was the only person in the court permitted to tell the king the truth. Not because he was wise — the court had advisors for wisdom. Not because he was brave — knights for bravery. The jester told the truth because he told it funny, and because laughter is the only container strong enough to hold a truth that would otherwise get a person killed.
The Hofnarr — the German word for court jester, which I prefer because it contains the word Hof (court) and Narr (fool), two things that should probably never be in the same room together and historically can't be kept apart — operated inside a specific deal. You are the fool. We will laugh at your foolishness. In the process, you will say the unsayable, and we will all pretend we only heard the joke.
